A Giddings & Lewis VTC-1600 vertical turning center and a RT-1250 horizontal boring mill, installed new in 2006, give machining capacity to 12 feet (3.65 meters) and turning capacity to 6 feet (1.83 meters). Table capacity on both machines is rated at 30,000 pounds (13,600 kilos).
The vertical turning center has live spindles in the c-axis (vertical) and 90 degrees opposed (horizontal) allowing for complete finishing of engine fan cases, pump housings, airframe structures and similar parts in a single set-up.
Both machines have tool probing and part probing. Tool probing increases machine utilization and provides precision from the first cut, as it corrects and modifies tool length and diameter. Part probing updates tool offsets and measures surfaces, diameters, lengths and angles to ensure part accuracy. Probing on both sides of center provides up to four times the probe accuracy compared to probing the radius.
